Obituary of Frederick R. Hanlon

Frederick Rae Hanlon, 87, peacefully passed away in the late evening of December 1 at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida. Born on May 11, 1929 in Walton, New York, he was the son of the late James E. Hanlon and late Helen M. Gladstone Hanlon. He was raised in Andes, New York and graduated from Andes Central School. He graduated from Ithaca College in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. He was a veteran of the Korean War as an Air Force Staff Sargent and was honorably discharged in 1955. The following medals were bestowed to him: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal. In 1954, Fred married the love of his life, Dolores A. Hanlon, for 47 years. Dolores predeceased him in 2001. He graduated from Boston University in 1955 with a Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling. He taught Physical Education for 2 years at Morton Junior High School in Fall River, MA and then moved to Poughkeepsie, NY to continue his career in the Poughkeepsie City School District as a Physical Education teacher and Guidance Counselor. He attended New York University and earned his administrators certification. Once Poughkeepsie Middle School was built in 1969, he became Assistant Principal and then Principal, and retired after 32 illustrious years in 1989. Fred loved to live life to the fullest and touched many people's lives with his kind and caring ways. He was a sports enthusiast. He played golf, tennis, loved to ski and ski race (NASTAR), hike, enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play various sports, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his daughter, Donna and her husband Victor Pecchia of Poughkeepsie; son Paul Hanlon of Poughkeepsie; daughter Beth and her husband James Utter of Poughkeepsie; grandsons Ryan, Brent and Anthony Pecchia, Shane Brandt, Cameron Utter of Poughkeepsie; granddaughter Nicole Brandt of Poughkeepsie; and 2 adorable great grandchildren Gianni and Giachenta Pecchia of Poughkeepsie. He is survived by his partner, Carol Casabonne. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter Lynne Hanlon, brother Robert Hanlon, and sister Virginia Kaufmann. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 8 from 4 – 8 pm with a service at 7:30 pm at Doyle's Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A private burial will be held in the near future.
