Obituary of Charles A. Bishop

Charles Andrew Bishop, 85, a resident of Elkton, Florida since 2003 and formerly of Pleasant Valley, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2017 at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. 

Born in Poughkeepsie, New York on January 4, 1932, Charles was the son of the late Herbert Lewis Bishop and Ethel May Hilliker Bishop.  

He married Mildred Woodin on December 14, 1957 in Poughkeepsie.  Mrs. Bishop preceded him in death on May 11, 2006 in St. Augustine, Florida.  Mr. Bishop married Susan Tyree on November 24, 2007 in St. Augustine and she survives him at home. 

Mr. Bishop attended Arlington High School.  He worked as a bus driver and in maintenance for the Arlington Central School District from 1950 to 1993 and served as the Head Groundskeeper for the District from 1976 until his retirement.  After retiring from the District, Mr. Bishop worked several years for the Town of Pleasant Valley Department of Recreation.

Throughout his life Mr. Bishop was involved in music.  He played drums in several bands in the Hudson Valley area including the Ambassadors, the Ramblers, Changing Faces, and the Don Traver Band among others.  After moving to Elkton, Florida in 2003 he played music with the Coquina Crossing Band and Chorus.  Mr. Bishop was an avid supporter of drum corps in Dutchess County including The Vagabonds, The Bridge City Cadets and The Falcons.  In addition, Mr. Bishop enjoyed playing dartball and was a member of several leagues in New York and Florida.  He enjoyed boating and traveling with his recreational vehicle.  Mr. Bishop was a member of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church and Bethel Tabernacle in St. Augustine. 

In addition to his wife, Susan, Mr. Bishop is survived by his daughters, Christine and  Thomas Edkins of Wayne, PA, Cathy and Raymond Thielke of Canastota, NY, Andrea and Robert Fortier of Palm Coast, FL, five grandchildren, Andrew and Hope Edkins, Daniel Fortier and Sarah Fortier Langley, and Lynne Thielke, and nieces Ura (Honey) Powell White of Wappingers Falls, NY, Cheryl Woodin Fernstrom of Ossining, NY, Jennifer Woodin of San Antonio, TX, Shawn Woodin of Tallahassee, FL and Stacie Woodin Cary of Austin, TX.  Mr. Bishop was predeceased by his brothers Herbert A. Bishop, Earl G. Bishop and sister Ura Bishop Powell.

The interment at Lagrange Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, New York will be private.
