Obituary of Hildegard Aya Windel

Aya, 94, of Poughkeepsie, peacefully went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Born January 9, 1923 in Tokyo, Japan, her family returned to Germany when she was 12. Aya married Karl Windel, the love of her life, in 1942 in Jena, Germany. In 1954, they moved to America with their only daughter Vera.

            Aya had a passion for crafts, particularly knitting, and utilized her talents at The Little Yarn Shop and Pattern Works. She loved helping others and spent 27 years volunteering at St. Francis Hospital. Aya is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vera and Charles, two granddaughters, Wendy (Mike) and Katherine, and six great-grandchildren, Justina and her fiancĂ© Joshua, David, Daniel, Robert, Joseph, and James.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 6, from 4-7pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Celebration of Life service will be held following visitation at 7pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tabernacle Christian Academy, 155 Academy Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
