Obituary of Howard E. Nichols

Howard E. Nichols, 84, passed away on January 9, 2022 after a short illness concurrent with a long battle against Alzheimer's disease.  He died at home, cared for by family and Hudson Valley Hospice.

Howard is survived by his wife Margaret (Gruner); daughter Rose (Johnna) Huling; daughter Margaret Moore; grandson Collin Moore; stepson Stephen (Susan) Nadas; step-grandchildren Joshua Nadas, Rachel Nadas, and Joseph Kamara, as well as nephews Frank, Michael and Timothy ODell.

In addition to his parents Elmer and Mildred Stanley Nichols, Howard was predeceased by his brother William, his sister Marie ODell, his stepdaughter Eve Nadas and his son-in-law John Moore.

Howard was born June 16, 1937 in Mount Vernon, NY.  He grew up in Cold Spring and enlisted in the US Naval Reserve while in Haldane High School.  He served 10  years as a Reservist, including active duty on submarines as a Communications Technician.  Howard was employed by IBM, working his way up from technician to engineer status until his retirement in 1992.

Howard had a lifelong love of learning, supported by a vast collection of books and articles. His many hobbies included ham radio (K2LBK), electronics, chemistry, tools, woodworking and stamp collecting.  He was devoted to his family and extremely proud of their accomplishments.   He was always eager to share stories and jokes, as friends and acquaintances can attest.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.  Because of the pandemic, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hudson Valley Chapter, or to

Hudson Valley Hospice Foundation.
