Obituary of Gloria M Catanzaro

 

POUGHKEEPSIE – Gloria Catanzaro, 96, long time resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie, died peacefully at Vassar Brothers Hospital after a brief illness, attended by members of her family on January 15, 2022.  She was born in Highland, NY on June 25, 1925, where she was raised and spent the early part of her life. 

Gloria was the daughter of the late Eugene and Pasqualena (LaRegina) DiLorenzo.  During WWII she worked in the coat factory in Poughkeepsie, where she made uniforms for soldiers.  After marrying, she became a mother and homemaker, and devoted her time to caring for her family.

Gloria enjoyed playing Mahjong, she was active in her church, Holy Trinity, as a member of the women’s society and as a Eucharistic minister.  She worked as a babysitter for 20 years, and had the pleasure of maintaining contact with many of the children she cared for into their adult years.  She was an avid fan of the NY Mets and rarely missed watching a game.

Gloria was the wife of the late Albert Carmine Catanzaro (deceased 1973), whom she married on May 13, 1947.  She is the mother of Victoria (deceased 2013) (Charlie-deceased 2016) Ferris, and is survived by her children Kathy of Poughkeepsie, Carol (Bruce) Germinaro of Duxbury, MA and Joseph A Catanzaro, Sr. (Nancy) of Maitland, Florida; her grandchildren Meghan (Leandro) Lacerda, Tammy Ferris; Joseph A. Catanzaro, Jr. (Cara), William Ferris and Kevin Catanzaro (Amanda); her great-grandchildren Lucas, Rebeckah, Taylor, Andrew, Emily, Noah, Zachary and Tanner; many nieces and nephews; and her furry friends Roxy and Riley.  In addition to her parents, husband and daughter Victoria, Gloria was predeceased by her siblings Gabriel, Minnie, John, Frank, Amelia and Vincent. 

The family would like to thank Gloria’s home care aide, Yeiana Smith, for her love, care and dedication.  In addition, the family is especially grateful to the nursing staff of the 4th and 6th floor of the Pavilion at Vassar Brothers Hospital for their loving care, compassion and devotion extended to Gloria, and the exceptional support given to members of her family.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2022 from 4pm – 8pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, January 21 at St. Martin DePorres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603, followed by a burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
