Obituary of Gerald J. Gates

Gerald J. Gates, “Jerry” of Pleasant Valley passed away at Vassar Medical Center on March 21, 2022.  He was 83 years old. 

Gerald was born on November 20, 1938, the son of William Howard and Mildred Rogers Gates.

He was a local resident of Pleasant Valley most of his Life. His work life included many years as the VP of Operations for Hoe Inc. in Poughkeepsie, NY.  Over the years, he also worked as a draftsman, talented woodworker and finish carpenter for multiple employers.  

Gerald was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pleasant Valley.

Gerald is survived by his partner of 26 years, Lorraine Votypkaof Pleasant Valley, NY, his son Kevin J. Gates and CharylSlezak of Rhinebeck, son Michael W. Gates and Sara Healy of Pleasant Valley, daughter Jill M. Karn and her husband Jeffreyof Poughkeepsie, daughter Dayle E. Gates and Michael Paul of San Diego, son Timothy P. Gates and his wife Jackie of Pleasant Valley, and son Steven P. Gates and his wife Jamie of Pleasant Valley. Bonus children Michael Votypka and partner Abigail and Kim Kozlowski and husband Bill of Wappingers Falls.

He is also survived by his brother Richard Gates and his wife Joanne of Wappingers Falls and sister in-law Virginia Gates of Pleasant Valley as well as 14 grandchildren, and multiple nieces and nephews. 

Gerald was predeceased by his brother Thomas Gates and his brother and sister In-law William and Patricia Gates.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday April 2, 2022, at St Paul’s Episcopal Church Poughkeepsie, New York. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.
