Obituary of Bernardine Prenting

Bernardine (Berni) Schlimm Prenting, 80, of Poughkeepsie, NY, beloved wife of Theodore O. Prenting, passed away at home on Friday, June 27, 2014. Born in Cincinnati, OH on March 6, 1934, Bernie was the daughter of Joseph R. and Petronella (Nellie) Schlimm. Bernie attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Oldenburg, IN and graduated from Mother of Mercy High School, Cincinnati, in 1952. Upon graduation from high school, she studied for, and passed, the Ohio State Board Examination for Dental Assistant and served as the dental assistant/receptionist for D. Ernst Jahnke, Cincinnati. On August 25, 1962, Berni married Theodore O. (Ted) Prenting of Poughkeepsie, NY at St. Martin of Tours Church, Cincinnati. After just a months in Poughkeepsie, she relocated with her husband to Chicago, IL. Bernie remained there for five years, during which time she had two children. A son, Peter Joseph, was born in Poughkeepsie, due to a death in the family requiring a temporary relocation. Later, a daughter, Mary Nell, was born in Chicago. In August 1968, she returned to Poughkeepsie with her family, when her husband was appointed a professor at Marist College. Bernie was active with the faculty wives' organization at Marist, took a number of classes there, but spend most of her time raising her children and managing a busy household. She was an active volunteer with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic and at Locust Grove, The Samuel F. Morse Historic Site. In later years, she served there as a docent. In addition, she served for several years as a member of the Board of Directors of Rehabilitation Programs, Inc., now Abilities First. She especially enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, needle work and did extensive traveling with her husband and family. Bernie is survived by her husband and a son Peter J. Prenting, both in Poughkeepsie; son-in-law Joseph J. Palumbo and granddaughters ; Grace, Charlotte and Lucy, Poughkeepsie; a brother-in-law Philip Price of Navarre FL; sister-in-law Patricia Schlimm, Cincinnati, OH; and sister and brother-in-law Marta (Prenting) Bastian and Bernhard Bastian, Royal Oak, MI. In addition, she is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Her daughter, Mary Nell Prenting-Palumbo, was predeceased on November 9, 2009. Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 30, 2014 from 4:00-8:00pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Trinity Church on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 10:0am and burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the Prenting Family Fund for Poughkeepsie of the Community Foundation of the Hudson Valley, 80 Washington St., Suite 201, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, or to a charity of your choice.
