Obituary of Hilary Stamper

Hilary Stamper, 86, of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away at home on December 14, 2023. She was born in Torquay, England on April 2, 1937, the daughter to the late Charles and late Lily Maude Burridge. Her early childhood memories consisted of playing with her elder sister, the late Ann Beling, and navigating constant air raids with her Mickey Mouse gas mask in their home bomb shelter. She graduated as a RN from St. Mary’s Hospital Paddington, London in 1959 where she met her lifelong friends, Anne, Lola and Anthea whom later became our “Aunt” Anthea from NYC. In 1960, she moved with her friends to the USA, Bay Area in California, Redwood City where she met her late husband, David Stamper. In 1962, she married David Stamper in Dorset, England. She remained a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY since 1964. Hilary was instrumental in starting Lamaze classes in Dutchess County dating back to the mid 1960’s where a number of her clients were from Timothy Leary’s Hitchcock Estate in Millbrook, NY. She also cofounded, with a group of friends, a predecessor to Hospice, in the Poughkeepsie area, in the late 1970’s. Hilary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school. She later became a member of the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church and was a member of the Tres Dias Community. Hilary enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, antiquing and spending time with friends, family and her grandchildren. She was a loving and kind wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include son Nicholas, son Andrew and wife Lily, grandchildren Cameron and Christopher and her son, Harlan and wife Gillian, grandchildren Johnathan and Olivia. Her daughter Sarah predeceased her which left a permanent void in her heart. Memorial Service arrangements will be held at a later date at the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church on New Hackensack Rd Poughkeepsie, NY for the convenience of the family.
