Obituary of William Aberle

William R. Aberle, died at home on January 12, 2010. Bill was born in 1923 in Gardiner, New York, the son of Ida and Walter R. Aberle. He attended Poughkeepsie Schools and served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Staff Sergeant in World War II in Okinawa. He worked for Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company for 38 years, retiring in 1986. He was also an associate with Carter Insurance as an insurance broker for 40 years. A member of the Pirate Canoe Club, Bill enjoyed sailing the Hudson. A highlight of his sailing years was participating in the New York Governor's Cup Regatta in New York Harbor in 1984. He was also a golfing and outdoor sports enthusiast. He loved his role as "Papa" to his grandchildren and they all always felt safe and loved with him. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marianna Burnett Aberle. He is also survived by his daughter, Judith Tarr of East Hampton; his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Thomas Murray of Cold Spring; his granddaughters, Lydia Tarr of East Hampton, Jessica Aberle of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Daphne Aberle of Seattle, WA; brothers-in-law, Robert Burnett and Rick Burnett, several nieces an nephews and stepgrandchildren, Kate, Nicky, Pete, Alicia and Paige. He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey B. Aberle, granddaughter, Emily Murray, sonó in-law, Dale Tarr, sister, Ruth Sheffield and his stepfather, George Knickerbocker. There are no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at 2pm at St. Philip's Episcopal Church on Route 9D in Garrison. If desired, donations may be directed to Dutchess County Hospice, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-1034, whose service to the Aberle family in the past few months has been priceless.
