Obituary of Andrew G. Bartoes

Andrew G. Bartoes, 81, a resident of LaGrangeville, NY, died March 4, 2010 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Mr. Bartoes was employed as a mechanical engineer for IBM in Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill for 33 years, in which he had received several awards over the years. He retired in 1989. He retired from the Navy Reserve in 1988 as a CW04 in the Civil Engineering Corp. He served with the Seabee Mobile Construction Battalion. Mr. Bartoes was an avid gardener and woodworker. In 1985, he received a certificate in gardening and in 1988 he received a certificate in landscape design from Cary Arboretum at the NY Botanical Gardens. In 1989, he became a Master Gardener with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County. He also received a certificate for 396 hours of machine shop practice from J.M. Wright Technical School. In addition, he taught engineering drawing at Dutchess Community College and technical courses in the IBM Training Program at Dutchess Community College. He also taught courses on fruit trees, pruning, and tool care for the Cornell Cooperative Extension. He was a life member of Hudson Valley Wood Carvers, Seabee Veterans of America, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County, and a former secretary of the Union Vale Grange. Mr. Bartoes was a communicant at St. Denis and Blessed Kateri. He worked as a money counter at St. Denis and as an usher at Blessed Kateri. Born in Bronx, NY, on July 2, 1928, he was the a son of Andrew J. and Edith DeLong Bartoes. He graduated from Darien High School, Darien, CT in 1946; Bridgeport Engineering Institute in 1951; and Michigan Technological University with Honors in 1959. On September 24, 1964 he married Jean Docherty at St. Christopher's Church, Montrose, NY. Mrs. Bartoes survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Lynn Marie Redl and her husband, Eric of LaGrangeville, NY; William D. and Debra Dunstan of LaGrange, NY; and Catherine Anne Vojtush of Venice, FL; four grandchildren, Melissa Snyder and her husband Dan of Churchill, IN; Michael Dunstan and his wife Katie of Poughkeepsie, NY; Sara Dunstan of Poughkeepsie, NY; and Vanessa Vojtush of Washington, MI; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Bartoes. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 8, 2010, 10:00 am, at Blessed Kateri Church with Msgr. O'Conner officiating. Burial will be in St. Denis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, Dutchess Outreach, and/or The American Cancer Society.
