Obituary of Kenneth Bennett

Kenneth Bennett, 88, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Bennett worked for Brenners Dairy and then Fitchett Brothers Dairy, retiring in 1979. Mr. Bennett was a member of the American Legion Post 1302, Retirees of Western and AARP Hyde Park Chapter. He was a Private First Class in the Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. He served in Guadacanal and the South Pacific. During his tour of duty, he saved eight other Marines during an attack on their Unit. When he was a youngster, he worked for the Roosevelt's and he always remembered the day he held the President's hat. Born March 24, 1920 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of Charles and Jennie Horton Bennett. He was a Arlington High School Class of 1939 graduate. On July 21, 1956 in Methodist Parsonage, Rhinebeck, he married Doris M. Krom. Mrs. Bennett survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his sister, Elaine Maglathlin of Springfield, MA and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Baitinger and Beatrice Pyle and four brothers, George, Richard, Earl and Lester Bennett. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 26, at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the New Hackensack Cemetery, in the Spring. Memorial donations may be made to Baptist Home, Rhinebeck, NY or the American Heart Association, Manchester Rd., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
