Obituary of Helen Butler

Helen F. Butler, 81, died peacefully at her home on December 25, 2010 while surrounded by her loving family. Helen was a lifelong area resident. She was born on November, 26, 1929 to Francis and Helen McDowell in Beacon, NY. Helen excelled in the nursing program at St. Francis School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie where she graduated in 1950. While in nursing school, she met the love of her life, Francis "Blackie" Butler. They were married at St. Joachim's Church in Beacon on November 20, 1954. He predeceased her in 2008. They had three beautiful children and shared a love of family vacations on the coast of Maine and drives in their beloved tan Model A sedan. In the beginning of her career, Helen was a nursing instructor at St. Francis School of Nursing. In the late 1960's she became the nurse at Dutchess Community College where she remained until her retirement in 1991. She wore many hats there, as she acted as nurse, friend and advocate to so many who walked into her office. She was an involved member of St. Peter's Parish in Hyde Park for many years, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a devoted member of the Third Order of Franciscans in Garrison, NY. She is survived by her children Michael Butler and his wife Leslie, Patrick Butler, and Peggy Valle and her husband Robert; grandchildren Katie, Michael Jr., Patrick Jr., Giorgina and Amanda Butler; step-grandchildren Amy and Nicole Alston and her daughter Janae; beloved sister and best friend AnnMarie Cataldo and her husband Maurice as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen's infectious smile, which she wore during the best and worst of times, will be with us always. For those of us so blessed to have loved her, we will strive to emulate her incredible sense of selflessness, deep faith, humility and compassion. Calling hours will be held Thursday December 30, 2010 at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie from 4 to 8pm. The Funeral Mass will be held Friday December 31, 2010 at 10:00am at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Church, 185 Hudson View Dr., Poughkeepsie. Services will be officiated by Fr. James A. Garisto. Burial will follow at St. Peters Cemetery
