Obituary of Robert Canning

Robert S. Canning, 69, a local resident of the City of Poughkeepsie since 1942, previously from Maryland, died Saturday, December 13, 2008 at home. He was a Steamfitter for Local 201 for 40 years until his retirement in 1994. He went to St. Peters School and a Poughkeepsie High School, a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, served in the United States Navy, life member of Crum Elbow Rod and Gun Club, Rogers Point and the American Legion Post 1466. Robert was the youngest of four boys. He loved to fish, hunt and golf. He loved to be around his family and brothers. Born November 30, 1939, in Maryland, he was the son of Lloyd T. and Isabel Frank Canning. On July 8, 1973, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, he married Lorraine DePaolo, who survives at home. Survivors include son and daughterin-law, Robert S. and Linda Canning, Jr. of Poughkeepsie; grandchildren, Zachary and Marissa Canning; brother, Lloyd Canning of Poughkeepsie; brother, John Canning and his companion, Elizabeth Skelly of Hyde Park; brother, James and Patricia Canning of Myrtle Beach, SC; several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 from 4pm to 8pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. American Legion Services will be held at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 9:30am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Burial will be at St. Peters Cemetery, Salt Point Turnpike, Poughkeepsie, NY. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Foundation, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
