Obituary of Isabelle Comatos

Isabelle A. Comatos, age eighty eight, died on November 21, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY. The youngest child of Joseph and Isabelle Whipple, Isabelle was born on July 30, 1922 in Jacksonville, Florida. In June 1946, she married Gerard (Jerry) Comatos who survives at home. She is also survived by her daughter Janet and her husband Donald Gauland of Yarmouth Port, MA; her son Gerard, Jr., his wife Diane, and her beloved grandchildren, Andrew, Dale, and Beth of Poughkeepsie; and many nieces and nephews. A 1942 graduate of Duke University School of Nursing, Isabelle enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps. After service in Fort Stewart, she was assigned to the hospital ship St. Olaf to aid the sick and wounded as they advanced from island to island in the Far East. She was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in March, 1946. Family gatherings were special and meaningful times in her life. Long walks and tennis matches with her husband gave her much joy. Her fifth great grandfather, William Whipple of New Hampshire, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. We are grateful to the staff at St. Francis and all who helped care for Isabelle. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and she will be deeply missed. Calling hours will be 4:00pm -7:00pm on November 26 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Isabelle's name may be made to the Children's Home, 10 Children's Way, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
