Obituary of Kevin Farrell

Kevin J. Farrell (Kenny), a resident of the City of Poughkeepsie, entered into rest on Thursday, August 25, 2011 in Punta Gorda, FL. He was 89. Born April 24, 1922 in County West Meath, Ireland, Kevin was the oldest of 3 sons. His parents, the late Patrick Farrell and Mary Fitzgerald settled in White Plains, NY, where they worked and raised their children. Kevin Attended White Plains High School where he excelled in both football and soccer. He set numerous records as a Field Goal Kicker, as well as scoring goals on the soccer field. Mr. Farrell lost the love of his life, Jennie, to cancer in 1995. His younger brothers Donald and Desmond predeceased him in 1968 and 1982 respectively. After graduating from high school, Mr. Farrell enlisted with the US Marines 25th Infantry Regiment where he proudly fought on Iwo Jima and Roi Namur during WWII. Kevin, after his discharge from the Marine Corps, worked for Central Hudson as a lineman. He then went on to work for IBM in Poughkeepsie, where he enjoyed a wonderful 38 year career in High Voltage and Maintenance. Always a promoter of “safety first”, Mr. Farrell took great pride in his job. Kevin was the recipient of IBM’s prestigious “Presidents Award” in 1985 for outstanding service. Mr. Farrell loved being active in sporting events with his son and his friends from elementary school through high school. Kevin was a great fan of the NY Football Giants, as well as the NY Mets and Yankees of baseball. He was the brother-in-law of the late Wes Westrum who played for the NY and San Francisco Giants, and later became the manager of the NY Mets. Kevin also loved bowling and participated in the IBM Indiana League for many years. He was a lifelong member of the Arlington American Legion Post #1302, and the Crum Elbow Rod and Gun Club. He will be greatly missed by his son Kevin, as well as many friends and family. Kevin’s family would also like to thank all of the wonderful people at The Life Care Center of Punta Gorda, FL for their meticulous care and concern for Mr. Farrell. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 from 5:00 – 8:00pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 10:00am at Mt. Carmel Church. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
