Obituary of James Gilpin

James Hyndman Gilpin was born in Dundee, Scotland on Nov. 10, 1926 and came to America as a child. He grew up in Yonkers, with his parents and his sister, June. He served in the United States Navy. Mr. Gilpin raised his children in Tuckahoe and then moved to Mt. Vernon until his retirement in 1989, when he moved to Virginia. He returned to Poughkeepsie to be closer to his family in 2001. On Feb. 18, 1978, he married Rita Manning Gilpin. Mrs. Gilpin predeceased him on May 26, 2007. He retired in 1989 from MetroNorth Railroad. Mr. Gilpin was a member of the United States Lighthouse Society and was an avid sailor and woodworker. Survivors include his daughters, Laurie Trangucci (Rich) and Jeanne Polizzano (Matt); a son, James Gilpin III (Terry); stepdaughters, Vicki Manning, Pam Manning Torres, Suzanne Manning and Beth Pelkey (David); his grandchildren, Richard and Bradley Trangucci; Jacqueline and Jimmy Gilpin; Matthew, Danielle and Brian Polizzano; Amber and Dana Tosi; Michael and Amanda Torres; Gwenn and John Hollis with Casandra and Michael; and Jessi Siconolfi, Barry and Daniel Pelkey; and great-granddaughter, Angela Polizzano. He was predeceased by his son, Robert Gilpin and son-inlaw, Michael Torres. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 8, at St. Peter's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Help Jessica Walk, PMB 109, 600 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, NY 12538. Arrangements under the direction of Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie.
