Obituary of Bernice Horvat

Bernice T. Horvat, 91, of Hyde Park, died at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on May 25, 2009. Mrs. Horvat was born on November 24, 1917 in the City of Poughkeepsie to Wojciech Maks and Emilia Miklowska Maks. She graduated from St. Joseph's School in 1933 and attended Poughkeepsie High School. She then worked at Vassar Brothers Hospital from 1937 until her marriage in 1941. On Sept. 28, 1941, she married John A. Horvat at St. Joseph's Church in the City of Poughkeepsie. Mr. Horvat died on January 18, 1976. She was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie. For 25 years(1953-1978), she laundered the vestments for the altar boys, priests and all the altar linens at the church. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her stillborn son, David, newborn son, Thomas, brothers, Stephen Maks, Victor Maks, and Raymond Maks, sisters, Dorothy Engelhardt, and Helen Maks. She is survived by her daughter, Janet M. Horvat, Hyde Park(with whom she made her home); son and daughter in-law, John G. and Donna Horvat, Poughkeepsie; granddaughter, Lisa M. Horvat, Poughkeepsie; grandson and his wife, John C. Horvat and Jessica, Florida; and great grandchildren, April Horvat and Aidan Horvat, Florida; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2009 from 2:00-6:00pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Holy Trinity Church on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 9:45am. Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
