Obituary of Edward A. Roberts

Edward A. Roberts, Jr., a former IBM Engineering Education Manager, died on Monday, December 29, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital at the age of 85. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and then the Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church after the congregation moved there this past Fall. He was also a member of the Tres Dias Community. Ed worked as a Literary Volunteer and as a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He served with the U.S. Army Engineers in Europe during World War II. He attended the University of Illinois and graduate schools at the University of Michigan and Columbia University. He taught at Washington State College and Columbia University. Born April 20, 1923 in Chicago, he was the son of Edward and Marjorie Dietz Roberts. On December 18, 1947 in Pullman, Washington, he married Paule Dubose Roberts. She predeceased him in 1991. Surviving are a son, Christopher Roberts and his wife, Regina of Fairfax, VA; a daughter, Chantal Sherwin and her husband, Douglas of Clinton Corners; a sister, Betty Roovaart and her husband, Larry of Arlington Heights, IL; and grandchildren, Chantal Marie, Sean, Lainey and Pascal, and a great grandson, Robert. Ed was a die-hard Yankees fan. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a kind, giving and loving individual who truly defined the word gentleman. A memorial service will be held at t the Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church, Route 55, LaGrangeville, NY 12540. Arrangements under the direction of the Timothy P.
