Obituary of Dimitrios Simou

Dimitrios "Taki" Simou, on Sunday January 9, 2011, surrounded by his family and friends, Dimitrios Simou passed away after a long and courageous battle with heart disease and cancer. He was 72. Taki, formerly of Chios, Greece resided in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was born January 14, 1938 to the late Pandelli and Angeliki Dogris Simou, in Chios, Greece. At the age of 12 Taki left home to work as a chef on the Greek cargo ships. During that time, he traveled around the world. On October 22, 1967, in Elefsina, Greece, Taki married Eleni Tetteris who survives at home. In 1970 Taki and Eleni came to the United States. Upon arriving in America Taki was a chef for the Andros Diner and the Highland Diner. In 1975 he owned and operated the Pleasant Valley Diner where he was the chef there for 23 years. Taki was a member and supporter of the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. In addition to his wife, Taki is survived by his son Pandelli Telly Simou and wife Nancy (Verven), their children Dimitri, Angela and George of Pleasant Valley, NY. Son Yianni Simou and wife Calliope (Siderias), their children Nicholas and Christiana of Poughkeepsie, NY. He is also survived by brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Demo and Cleo Tetteris, nieces Joanne Tetteris and Julia Takos and her husband George. A Brother-in-law and sister-in-law Stratis and Angeline Tetteris and nieces Julia Mendez , Anthoula Tetteris and nephew John Tetteris , all of Florida. Nieces Ria Merkert and Vaso Fineskos of Virgina. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family in Greece. Taki was predeceased by several brothers and sisters in Greece. In addition to family, Taki leaves behind numerous lifelong friends whose strength and support will never be forgotten. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4-8 at Timothy Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave Poughkeepsie, NY and a funeral service will take place Monday at 11am at Timothy Doyle Funeral Home as well.
