Obituary of Gus Vaselekos

Gus Vaselekos, a resident of Poughkeepsie since 1950, formerly of Yonkers, NY, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Stuart, Florida. His wife, Helen of sixty years, died in the same accident which occurred three weeks earlier. Mr. Vaselekos born June 27, 1924 in Yonkers, NY was the son of the late George and Mary Sandukas Vaselekos. He graduated from Commerce High School in Yonkers and then joined the US Navy Seabees during World War II. He served in Hawaii, the Phillipines and Japan. He married Helen Michos in Mount Vernon, NY in 1948, moved to Poughkeepsie in 1950 and with her brother and sister-in-law, Soteros "Soc" and Evelyn Michos, opened the Sit 'N Chat Luncheonette(1950-1959). Mr. Vaselekos then managed the Mardi-Bob Bowling Corporation for 27 years, retiring as President. He was a member of the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church and the Order of AHEPA. Mr. Vaselekos is survived by his daughter and sons-in-law, Janet and Sidney Eisig and Thomas Smith. He is also survived by grandchildren, Samantha Smith and Justin and Alexandra Eisig; sister, Sophie Yetz of Jupiter, Florida and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by his loving daughter, Maria Smith and by brothers, William and Peter Vaselekos. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 19, 2009 from 6pm to 9pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be held Friday, 10am at the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, 140 South Grand Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. Entombment will follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Gus's name to the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, 140 South Grand Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
