Obituary of Stephen W. Rousseas

Rousseas, Stephen W., Dexter M. Ferry Jr. Emeritus Professor of Economics at Vassar College, and, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, "the world's greatest authority," died on February 1, 2012, at age 91, in Poughkeepsie, NY. Born on January 11, 1921 in Scranton, PA, he was the son of the late William and Lillian Rousseas. He graduated from Columbia with a B.S., 1948; A.M., 1949; Ph.D., 1954. He taught at Columbia University, the University of Michigan, Yale University, Cornell University, New York University, and Vassar College where he was very much respected by his students. He is the author of The Death of Democracy: Greece and the American Conscience, Monetary Theory, Capitalism and Catastrophe: A Critical Appraisal of the Limits of Capitalism, The Political Economy of Reaganomics: A Critique, and numerous articles and reviews. A friend of Andreas and Margaret Papandreou, the Greek political figure and his wife, he was very active in American organizations supporting Papandreou after the 1967 coup d'état in Greece. Survivors include his beloved wife, Claude Rousseas (nee Chauvierre); brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Stella Rousseas; brother-in-law John Gabriel; cousin Florence Zaneteas; nephews Phillip, William, Dean, William, and Stephen; nieces Anne, Pamela, Cynthia, and Lynn; and was a great great uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Anargeros and Violet Rousseas; and his sisters, Athena Gabriel and Panayota Karamanena. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 4, from 2-5 p.m. at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, NY.
