Obituary of George O. Macy

George O'Dell Macy, 87, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2012 at the Carolina House in North Carolina. He was a long time resident of Poughkeepsie New York. He was born on April 27, 1925 in Roanoke Virginia to Lena S. Macy and moved to Poughkeepsie when he was eight years old. He attended Poughkeepsie High School and married Anna May Whisple on June 10, 1945. George was very proud to enlist in the United States Marine Core in 1942, served during WWII in Guadal Canal and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1945. George started his own very successful welding business, George Macy, Inc. in Poughkeepsie, which was later passed down to his son Greg when he retired. Once retired, George became a member of the Poughkeepsie Plumbing Board. Survivors include his wife Ann currently living in North Carolina, his son Greg Macy and wife Kathy of Verbank, daughter Susan Macy Mewkill and husband Bob of North Carolina, grand-daughter Kimberly Macy of Middletown, sister Barbara Miller and husband Carl of North Carolina, sister-in-law Marj Macy of North Carolina, brother-in-law Jimmy Damico of Poughkeepsie, brother Bill Macy of Tennessee and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his mother, Lena S. Macy, sister Betty Damico and brother Mike Macy. You may pay your respects to George and his family on Friday from 6-9 PM at Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue in Poughkeepsie. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at Doyle Funeral Home with interment with military honors following at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in his name to Hospice of Wake County NC or the Marine's Memorial Club of San Francisco, CA. The family wants to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Carolina House for their excellent care and love, and Hospice of Wake County for their constant compassion and support.
