Obituary of Charles Handschin

Charles Grant Handschin, 89, of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the Lutheran Care Center. Born on July 15, 1922 in Astoria Queens, he was the son of the late Charles and Antoinette Kuncir Handschin. He had been a local resident for 48 years and previously of Long Island. Charles attended the Manhattan Aviation Trade High School. Charles served in the United States Army from 1941-1945,He served with the 345th fighter squadron for 33 months as a Crew Chief on P-47 Thunderbolts in north Africa, Sardinia, and Italy. He was awarded the European African Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, AP Mechanic Medal, and the Victory Medal for his service. On April 15, 1961 he married Elizabeth J. Quinn at St. Kevin's Church in Flushing, NY, and she survives him at home. Charles worked for IBM in Quality Control and he retired in 1987. Charles loved to bowl and golf and belonged to a number of leagues. He was a volunteer at Bowdoin Park as a Nature Guide and Indian Lore. In addition to his wife who survives at home, Charles is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Warren Tillou of Poughkeepsie, NY and daughter and son-in-law Kathryn J. and Todd Robinson of Bethesda, MD. His grandchildren David King, Diana King, Heather Brown, Grant Robinson and Kylie Robinson also survive, as well as his 7 great-grandchildren. Additionally he is survived by his wife Elizabeth's family. Charles was predeceased by his son Kenneth C. Handschin in 2005 and his brother Theodore R. Handschin in 2003. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 from 2:00 - 6:00pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
