Obituary of Christine Fitchett

Christine Wheaton Fitchett, 62 of Poughkeepsie died in her home on August 26, 2012, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous four year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born on August 3, 1950 in Hyde Park, the daughter of the late Paul and Delilah Wheaton. Christine is also predeceased by her sister Sherry Lonergan and her mother-in-law, Bernice Fitchett. Christine attended F.D. Roosevelt High School, graduated with a BA from Springfield College in 1972, and went on to obtain her Master of Library Science from Syracuse University. She began her career as a librarian at Bard College (1973), followed by Dutchess Community College (1977-1978 and 1981-1982), and finally retired from Vassar College library last November (1986-2011). Through her career she was able to pass along her love of knowledge, research and reading. On May 12, 1973 Christine married her high school sweetheart, Gary Fitchett, who survives her at home. She is also survived by her father-in-law Edwin Fitchett, three children: Colleen and her husband Andrew Moser, Jocelyn and her husband Kristoffer Walker, and Todd Fitchett and his significant other Marla Figueroa-Rodriguez, and her four grandchildren: Carson Walker, Rory Walker, Katherine Moser and Emmett Moser. In addition she is survived by her brothers-in-law Dana Lonergan, Wayne ad his wife Patricia Fitchett, and Neil and his wife Christine M. Fitchett, as well as 6 nieces and nephews. Christine was president of the Violet Avenue PTA for several years, participated in the Milk for Life program and enjoyed creating delicious soups with her children and mother for the Soup Kitchen. Some of her fondest memories include summers in Osterville on Cape Cod, MA with Four Seas cantaloupe ice cream and butterscotch sauce, visits to Candlewood Lake with friends and family, and time at the Dutchess County Fair with the 4-H pig program. She was a loving wife, mother and Grammy and will be greatly missed by all. Friends and family may call from 4:00 - 8:00pm on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A service will be held on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 10:30am in the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
