Obituary of Dorothy Estes

Dorothy Estes, 100 years old, passed away at her Town of Poughkeepsie home on Saturday, September 8, 2012. She was born in Lockport, NY (Niagara Co.) on May 25, 1912 to Frederick & Ethel (Brackett) Harrington. On March 29, 1934 she married Robert E. Estes and they lived to celebrate 76 years of marriage. Robert predeceased Dorothy in 2010. Dorothy is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Kenneth & Betty Estes and Robert Jr. & Sally Estes, all of Caledonia, NY and her daughter Marilyn Beck of Poughkeepsie. Other survivors include 9 grandchildren: Kevin W. Beck of Milton, NY; Brain Beck of Kaplan, Louisiana; Sharon Warman of Poughkeepsie; Roger Estes of Caledonia, NY; Dean Estes of Caledonia, NY; Faline Tyler of Byron, NY; Robin Shuknecht of Elba, NY; Kenneth Estes, Jr. of Caledonia, NY; Melissa Adams of Stafford, NY; 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Dorothy was a faithful volunteer at Vassar Hospital for many years, working in the Cupboard coffee shop. She was a 4-H leader for many years - teaching young girls the skills and joy of baking and sewing. Her eyes that failed her the last few years were the eyes that scrutinized the sewing skills as she judged at the Dutchess Count Fair. She loved to entertain and prepare a lovely meal in her home for her guests. Her rose garden was a great passion also. Since Dorothy & Robert had a long retirement, they enjoyed many winter months at their Florida home on Nettles Island at Jensen Beach. In addition to her husband Robert, Dorothy was predeceased by her "favorite son-in-law" Ron Beck in 2011 and her three younger brothers Norman, Lester & Lee. The family will be ever grateful to the good care that both Robert & Dorothy had to allow them to stay in their own home - especially Amy who cared for them the longest. There will be no calling hours and the burial will be at the convenience of the family in the family plot at the Oatka Cemetery in Scottsville, NY.
