Obituary of Filomeana DeFranco

Filomena DeFranco, a long time resident of Poughkeepsie, NY passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family on October 21, 2012. She was 80 years old. Born in Lauria Potenza, Italy on September 26, 1932, she was the daughter of Domenico and Maria Domenica Bloise D'Angelo. On January 18, 1958 she married Franco DeFranco in Lauria Potenza, Italy. Mr. DeFranco predeceased her on January 14, 2010. In May, 1963 Filomena and Franco were given the opportunity to come to America where they were able to make a wonderful life for themselves and their children. Filomena was a seamstress and previously owned Arlington Tailors in Poughkeepsie with her late husband Franco. She also worked for J.K. Dress in Poughkeepsie, and various other dress factories in the area. Filomena loved to laugh and entertain family and friends. Always the life of the party, she loved to sing and dance at all festivities. She touched the lives of everyone who knew her. Her family meant the most to her and she was very devoted to them. Throughout her life she was always ready and willing to be the caregiver for her family and friends whenever there was a need. She loved to cook for holidays and gatherings and was always planning them so that she could have the people most important to her around. For many years, Filomena and Franco traveled to Quebec, Canada on a pilgrimage to St. Anne DeBeaupre with a very special group of friends. These trips were some of her fondest memories and special times with special people. She is survived by her children, Anna Lauria and her husband, Tony. Her son, Joe DeFranco and his wife, Janine. Granddaughter, Kimberly Shirk and her husband, Nathan; grandsons, Anthony Lauria, Jr., Frank A. Lauria, and Biagio A. DeFranco; great-granddaughters, Addison and Abigail Shirk, and a very special sister-in-law and brother-n-law, Felicetta and Vincenzo Dalia all of Poughkeepsie, NY; sisters, Teresa Cassino, Antonina Grisolia, Carmelina Paffuni, and brother, Guglielmo D'Angelo all of Italy and many nieces and nephews both in Poughkeepsie and in Italy. In addition to being predeceased by her husband, she is also predeceased by two brothers, Giacomantonio D'Angleo and Raffaele D'Angelo, and one sister, Vincenza Cozzi of Italy. Calling hours will be held Wednesday October 24, 2012 from 4pm to 8pm, at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home 371 Hooker Ave. Poughkeepsie, New York 12603. A mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday 10am October 25, 2012 at Holy Trinity Church Poughkeepsie New York. Burial will follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. We, her family, would like to extend our deep appreciation to all those who helped care for Filomena at The Pines at Poughkeepsie, especially the very caring and dedicated staff of the sixth floor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
