Obituary of Mario F. Scalzi

Mario F. Scalzi, passed away peacefully on Friday January 18 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was 78. Born in White Plains, NY on December 10, 1934 he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Elena (Donato) Scalzi. In 1941 Mario moved to Poughkeepsie, where he attended Poughkeepsie High School graduating in 1953. A veteran, Mario proudly served in the US Navy from 1954 to 1957. After the Navy Mario went on to work for IBM as a Lab Technician retiring in 1992. Later, Mario took a part-time position as a security guard for College View Towers in Poughkeepsie where he was well liked and made many friends. He really enjoyed going to work and will surely miss socializing with the many tenants he considered friends. On May 10, 1959 Mario married Beverly (Pittman) Scalzi in Poughkeepsie, NY at St. Mary's Church. Beverly survives at home.Those who knew Mario remember him as a friendly, loyal person with a great sense of humor whom they could count on to help. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and he also liked attending his ship reunions. Mario liked watching sports and was a diehard NY Giants and Yankees fan, with which he had a love/hate relationship. He also was a lifelong cat lover, and an early hobby of HAM radio operator. In addition to his wife of 54 years, Mario is survived by his son, Damon Scalzi of Poughkeepsie, NY, daughter, Dayna Scalzi of Poughkeepsie, NY, son, Darryl Scalzi of Poughkeepsie, NY, daughter, Debra Vainio of Virginia, brother, Bart Scalzi of Poughkeepsie, NY, sister, Mary Wilcenski of Albany, NY, two beautiful, beloved grand-children, Isabella and Darryl Jr. and many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins in Italy, in-laws and friends. Mario was predeceased by his brother Louis Scalzi and twin brother Vincent. He was also predeceased by his niece, Margo Kobler. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 23 from 4pm to 8pm at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Poughkeepsie, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Thursday, January 24 at 10am at Our Lady the Rosary Chapel of St. Peters Parish, 299 Hudson View Drive Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
