Obituary of Maria Garofalis

Maria (Loussedes) Garofalis POUGHKEEPSIE Maria L. Garofalis went to rest with the Lord on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Born in New York City on July 24, 1926, she was the daughter of George Loussedes and Eftihia Souetsmezes Loussedes. On February 22, 1953, she married her ever-loving and devoted husband of 60 years who survives at home, at the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church. After graduating Poughkeepsie High School, Maria worked many years for New York Telephone. Later, she worked for Vassar College's Message Center until her retirement, in 1985. Maria was a life-long member of the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, a long-standing member and past president of the Daughters of Penelope, and a member of the Kimisis Ladies Philoptochos Society. She truly enjoyed the company and good times spent with her family and good friends. In addition to her husband, Maria is survived by her two daughters, Despina Stathidis and son-in-law Alex of Poughkeepsie, and Stephanie Sidote and son-in law Mark of Warrenton, Virginia. Also surviving are her five grandchildren, Vasili Stathidis, George Stathidis, Maria Sidote, Steven Sidote and Gregory Sidote, who were the rays of sun in her life. She is also survived by her loving and devoted sister, Penelope Bogdanos of Clearwater, Florida, sister-in-law Anna Loussedes of Poughkeepsie, as well as a niece, several nephews and god-daughters. Maria was predeceased by her parents and brothers Sarantos Loussedes and Anthony Loussedes and his wife, Mae Loussedes. Those who knew Maria will always remember her great sense of style and especially her warm smile and kind heart. The family would like to especially thank the doctors of the Mid-Hudson Medical Group and staff of the Nephrology Unit, Circle 5, as well as South Circle 7 and the Lutheran Care Center for their exceptional care, professionalism and kindness throughout Maria's numerous hospital stays. The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be held on Friday January 25 at 10 a.m. at the Kimisis Greek Orthodox Church, 140 South Grand Avenue, Poughkeepsie.
