Obituary of Joann Plog

Joann Neuwirth Plog of Pleasant Valley passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. She was born on August 12, 1923 in Poughkeepsie. She graduated from Nativity School in 1938, then Poughkeepsie High School in 1941 with honors and obtained membership in the National Forensic Honor Society. After high school, she worked for the Prudential Insurance Co. in Poughkeepsie. She married Arthur D. Plog on June 12, 1943. After Mr. Plog returned from the U.S. Coast Guard after World War II, she moved to Schenectady, N.Y. where she took a job at General Electric as an Executive Secretary to management. Mr. & Mrs. Plog moved back to Poughkeepsie in 1952 and lived in Red Oaks Mill. Joann was the daughter of Frank & Marie Neuwirth and she had one sister Mildred who predeceased her. They were blessed with two children, Arthur (Dan) Plog, Jr. and his wife Phyllis of the town of Lagrange and Kathleen Knippler and her husband Robert of Middlebury, Vermont. Kathleen passed away in 2010. There are three grandchildren, David Kloepfer and his wife Megan of Middlebury, Vermont; Michael Plog and his wife Mary of Woodbridge Ontario, Canada and Bryan Plog of the town of Lagrange. There is one great-grandchild, Mary also of Middlebury, Vermont. Joann was very active in activities other than home. She was president of the Mother's Club at the IBM Country Club and organized Children's Theatre also at IBM. She was a charter member of the Red Oaks Mill Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary and was President of the auxiliary for two terms. She was recording secretary for the Town of Poughkeepsie zoning, planning and plumbing boards. She was also the secretary for the Arlington Fire District Board of Commissioners until her health wouldn't let her work anymore. She was an election inspector for 40 years and worked for the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Dutchess County Home Bureau and Study Club where she gained knowledge in flower arrangement and sewing. She made clothing for her two children. Joann was well known for her friendliness and being jolly and helping others when she could. After living in Red Oaks Mill for 53 years, Joann and her husband moved to the Fountains at Millbrook and then in December, 2012 they moved to Pleasant Valley. Calling hours will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 4 to 8pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Friday, September 20, 2013 at Holy Trinity Church, Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
