Obituary of George Apenteng

Dr. George A. Apenteng, 78, a former resident of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Friday June 18, 2021, at UPMC Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. 

Born in Ghana on January 02, 1943, he was the son of the late Nana Offeihene Kwadwo Apenteng and the late Esther Adwoa Yirenkyiwa Awuku. George lived most of his life in Ghana and Togo and obtained his undergraduate degree in Economics from The University of Ghana, Legon. He received a Master of Artsdegree and a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career at the Bank of Ghana as an economist and served in various capacities at the ECOWAS Fund in Togo.  He ended his corporate career as the executive director of the Institute of Economic Affairs in Ghana. From 2002 until his retirement in 2009, he was a Principal Lecturer/Associate Professor of Economics at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

George met his late wife Constance in 1969 and they were married four years later in Pittsburgh, PA. George was an avid reader who enjoyed publications such as The Economist, Timesand Business Week. He was passionate about politics and sports. George was a loving father, brother, grandfather, and uncle. He is survived by his children Yaw Apenteng, an internal medicine physician, Panyin Akosua Apenteng an economist, Kakra Akosua Baiden an assistant chief operating officer, Tawia Apenteng Ampofo a neonatology physician, sons-in-law Edward Baiden, a global general manager, Sefakor Ampofo, a senior systems engineer, and daughter-in-law Tanae Apenteng, a nurse,six grandchildren, and four siblings.
