Obituary of Robert C Miller

Robert C. Miller passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Jon Vincitore. He was 97 years old.

Robert was born on December 15, 1926 in Poughkeepsie, NY.  He was the son of Katherine and Fred Miller, Sr. He was predeceased by his brothers Fred and Richard Miller.

Bob attended Arlington High School where he excelled in sports, playing varsity football, basketball and baseball. He was elected President of his class for four years. He was inducted into the Dutchess County Hall of Fame in both basketball and baseball. He was recently inducted into the Arlington High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

He graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Recreation and Health. While at Ithaca he played three years of varsity basketball.

After graduation from college, Bob worked at The Millbrook School for Boys as the Assistant Director of Athletics and Physical Training. He left The Millbrook School and was appointed the first Director of Recreation for the Town of Poughkeepsie.

On October 27, 1951, he married Teresa Callahan at St. Mary’s Church in Poughkeepsie. They enjoyed a beautiful and loving 68-year marriage, filled with laughter and love. Teresa predeceased Bob in October 2019.

Bob taught Physical Education in the Hyde Park Central School District. He  was often reminded by his former students of his famous announcement as the students’ entered the gym: “Line Up On The Black Line.” He had a booming voice that caught everyone’s attention.

Bob retired from teaching in 1982 and he and Teresa moved to Vero Beach, Florida. One of his favorite activities in Florida was taking his grandchildren to Dodgertown while the Dodgers were in Spring Training. He enjoyed playing softball with the Vero Beach Codgers, riding his bike, with his bat over his shoulder, to the park to play with the “boys” well into his 80s. He enjoyed golf with his good friends at the Dodgertown Golf Course. From Vero Beach, Bob and Teresa settled into Spanish Lakes Fairways in Fort Pierce, FL. They became very active square dancers, competing in State and National Conventions. Bob and Teresa’s active lifestyle after moving to Florida, contributed to their good health, happy nature and countless friends wherever they went. He often said that he retired from teaching and went to “summer camp” for the rest of his life!

Above all, family came first. Bob and Teresa are survived by their four children: Kathleen (Jon) Vincitore, Poughkeepsie;  Robert (Cindy) Miller, Staatsburg; Nancy (David) Pisanelli, Staatsburg; Steven (Sarah) Miller, Rhinebeck.
